Researching chemistry student’s emotions and their perceptions of the metacognitive strategies used when learning organic chemistry.

Abstract: This talk will feature a presentation of two research articles. Firstly, I will document my journey of reviewing research on chemistry students’ attitudes, self-efficacy, self-concept, expectations, values, interest, motivation, effort beliefs and achievement emotions. I will describe the five dominant themes to this work and offer directions for future research in this area. Secondly, I will present a research study that has involved identifying the metacognitive strategies students perceive to use when learning organic chemistry at undergraduate level. I will also indicate how the nature of their organic chemistry course; be it courses that have adopted transformed or traditional approaches to teaching and learning, has appeared to influence these perceptions.
