Title: Navigating the Editorial Process: Strategies for Successful Publication from an Author and Editor

Abstract
The journey to publication can often be a challenging one, beginning long before the research itself begins. It is crucial to recognise that while rejection may feel personal, it is a common experience in academia and does not reflect your worth or capabilities as a researcher. By focusing on effective design and presentation of your work, setting realistic expectations and goals, and gaining a deeper understanding of the editorial process, you can significantly enhance your publication journey.

In this presentation, we will provide valuable insights and practical strategies across three key stages of the publication process: (i) pre-submission, (ii) post-submission, and (iii) post-rejection. Attendees will learn how to establish achievable goals, effectively present their findings, and select the most appropriate journals for their work.

We will also delve into the intricacies of the editorial process, highlighting the roles of both reviewers and editors. You will discover the importance and value of constructive feedback, even when it does not result in immediate acceptance, as well as how to effectively revise your work and respond to reviewer comments.

Additionally, we will share strategies following a rejection that will improve your chances of acceptance elsewhere, including the benefits of transfer offers. While the path to publication can be tough, our session aims to equip you with the tools you need on this journey and increase your chances of success. Join us to learn how to navigate this process more effectively.

Bio
Jessica Tom received her Ph.D. in 2014 from the University of Sydney, where she focused on the application of Controlled/Living Radical Polymerization techniques to modify and enhance the properties of materials, including cellulose and silica nanoparticles. Following her doctoral studies, she conducted postdoctoral research at both Technische Universität Darmstadt and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Her work involved tuning the ionic permselectivity of mesoporous materials for lab-on-chip devices, and developing block copolymer micelles containing either photoacids and photobases for photo-triggered local drug release.

In 2021, Jessica transitioned from academia to the publishing industry joining Elsevier’s Berlin office. Since then, her role has evolved, but her primary focus has consistently been on supporting authors throughout the publication process. She provides guidance, facilitates opportunities for revisions, and assists with transferring manuscripts to more appropriate journals. One of the most rewarding aspects of her position is helping researchers navigate the editorial process, as well as conducting author workshops and seminars to share valuable insights and strategies that she wishes she had known during her own time as an author and researcher.
