Title: Innovation in CHEM1 through the Lens of Educational Research
Abstract: Over the last few years (besides trying to get through the pandemic!), many tweaks and innovations have been brought into the CHEM1 teaching space. Shane and Stephen will discuss two such innovations in the lab: The LearnSci laboratory simulations and the incorporation of student-decided authentic assessment. Both projects will be discussed through the lens of educational research, with large datasets, modern analysis techniques, and theoretical frameworks included. Lastly, Stephen will give a quick update on the flipped workshop model being utilised in CHEM1112.
Bio: Stephen and Shane about both education-focused academics in the school of chemistry. Together, they run the CHEM1 units, with Stephen acting as the unit coordinator and Shane directing the labs.
