Abstract: Talking the Table – Dr Alice Motion
Chemistry may be the central science, but it is largely underrepresented in public discourse when compared to its neighbours. In 2019, the designation of a UN International Year for the Periodic Table opened up opportunities for public engagement with chemistry that have been seized the world over. Through talks, cake sales and record attempts, chemists found ways to connect with the public and to start conversations about chemistry.
As we approach the end of this important year for our discipline, we invite you to the SUCS AGM followed by a talk from our outgoing SUCS President Dr Alice Motion.
In this talk, Alice will identify challenges in communicating chemistry to public audiences, make a case for the importance of chemistry outreach and participation, and suggest ways in which we can activate chemical conversations and keep them stirring long after the sun sets on the International Year of the Periodic Table.
